Walking Blog and The Powers of Love

I wanted to take a moment and update you guys with regards to how I am going to be posting about the walking tour going forward.  I knew from the beginning that this trip was going to be very special, and I have been constantly toiling with how best to share it with you.

The true essence of this project, and everything I work towards, revolves around people, the connections that exist between human beings, and sharing stories that inspire, educate, and help others grow.   I have had so many encounters with the most amazing individuals over the last few weeks, I could write a book on it.  However, what I feel is best is to share not just my journey, but positive tales of others journeys that I meet on the way.  There is no lack of heavy/sad stories out in the media, so I’d like to make this site a place of zen and happiness.

Now….While in PEI, I had the delightful opportunity to spend an afternoon with a man I met through the Island Trails Walking Group in PEI.  He invited me to go kayaking with him in the Charlottetown harbour post walk.  Whilst paddling, bathed in sweet sunshine, I asked him how he found his way to PEI, and he shared a beautiful story with me.

In 1970, he drove from Saskatchewan to meet his girlfriend in Toronto to spend Christmas together, and they went to New York for New Years Eve together.  At that time, she had a job in PEI.

After New Years, the man simply offered to drive his lady home……TO PEI!….and off they went.  Upon arriving on the island, he thought to himself…”I still have 5 holidays from my job….if I can find a job in PEI in that time, I’m not going back.”

And sure enough…he found a situation with a farmer working in machinery – never went back.  Happy as a clam since!  The straight up faith and romance of this story floored me.  What a lovely reminder of the powers of love!

Looking forward to sharing more tales of the unique individuals I am meeting on the way!

Interview on CBC Charlottetown with Karen Mair

Greetings from the wicked island of Prince Edward!

Will have more of an update on recent happenings of the walking tour next week, as there is a great deal to share, but thought I would give you something fun in the meantime.  I had the opportunity to go in and talk with Karen Mair of CBC Charlottetown about the project, and you can hear it by clicking the photo above.

Looks like I’m going to be in PEI until Sunday or Monday, and I am pumped to let you in on all that has developed from my adventures this last week.  Stay tuned 🙂

Wandering Canada Man!

Update from the road, and official walking start in PEI July 1st!

It’s been two weeks on the road/train tracks, and much longer since I have written anything to update, so here is a quick one to lay some ground for what’s to come……

Jen Miller and I had an amazing experience riding the Via Rail train from Vancouver to Toronto.  What a lovely way to see the country’s landscape diversity, and a great opportunity to connect with travelers from all around the world.

To light speed summarize the train….ate incredible food, slept in cool transforming rooms (ie. beds magically fold out of the walls and ceilings of the rooms), jammed with kids, a violinist, shakers, singers, riot controlled an impending Via Rail strike in Winnipeg, and probably walked 10km on the train itself!

Since hitting Toronto, we’ve played 3 venue gigs, and have one more tomorrow night at The Central, then off on the train to Halifax this Friday.  It’s been fantastic to catch up with family and friends not seen for some time, and I thank you all for the amazing experiences.  I even got to ride the Maid of the Mist at Niagra Falls…Got quite the shower!

Lastly, my walking tour starts in less than 1 week!!!  I am beginning on Canada in PEI, and can’t wait to begin this adventure.  Jen and I have a couple shows together as our duo on PEI July 6th/7th, and then I continue walking PEI.  We’ll be touring Nova Scotia/New Brunswick together until end of July, and the 1 whole week performing on the Marine Atlantic Ferry between Newfoundland and Nova Scotia (SEE SHOW LIST HERE).  As of August 7th….I’ll be in Newfoundland solo.  Going to hang around for the Music Festival Aug.9-11th, and then open stroll until end of September.  If you’re around Newfoundland in August, or Nova Scotia in September and feel like a stroll, watch “WALK WITH MICHAEL TAB” on the website, or give me an email.  More to come after the walk begins next week!!

Exciting News!!

Something really special just happened – It worked out for me to perform the first night of my album release in Kelowna at Glenmore Elementary, the school my father spent the last 19 years of his career in education.  So delighted to be having it there!

My new album “I’d Rather Walk,” is being printed as you read, and ticket links for the first shows in Kelowna are up for May 10th and 11th.

Overall, there will be 3 shows in my home town – Friday May 10th at the school, and 2 shows on Saturday May 11th in a smaller house concert format (Afternoon & Evening).  Seating for the house concert shows are quite limited, so be sure to get tickets soon if you’d like to come to either of those.

The album will be available online in one week, and in physical form as of the 10th.  I am truly ecstatic to share it with you, and all the wild stories it comes with.

Yukon Chronicles…

Click on the picture for an article that was written about my recent Yukon adventure:

Standing In My Father’s Past…Literally…

I have to admit – Yesterday I had one of “those” feelings….Not so much a sense of overwhelm, but a sort of nervous/unexplainable awareness you get when you step into a physical environment with a lot of history.  I had an interview at CBC Whitehorse yesterday, and had the chance to stand in the same spot my Dad recorded many many years ago.  See below:

Tim Kinvig, the sound technician that was present for my Dad’s recordings, the man I was initially introduced to via email in January, took both of these photos…..I have a group of friends that I share stories with of large magnitude, and we usually end our stories with the phrase “Mind blown.”

This would be one of those scenarios =

MIND BLOWN!

Anyhow, I was very fortunate to speak with David White of CBC, and the interview can be heard by clicking the CBC picture below:

The whole experience was wrapped up with a tour from Tim – Pictures, control consoles that he hand built from scratch, and wonderful stories galore.  So cool!

All of this has got me quite fired up to hit the road to Faro tomorrow…. home of the Farrago Festival where my Dad performed in 1976.  My mom, a couple of old Yukon friends of hers and I, went to the Yukon Archives yesterday after the interview, and were able to hear my Dad’s full festival performance!  What a treasure hunt this has been!

I’ll be playing a show at the Spotlight Theater there, starting at 7pm.  If you’re around or know someone who may be, please pass this on.  It’s going to be a very special evening, and I’m so looking forward to posting about that experience 🙂

No Fools….Just Gold!!

Today is a special day….

It is a day for playing practical jokes, sharing laughs, and not taking life too seriously….so make sure you have fun ;).   It also happens to be my last day of my Alberta tour, and it has been a wonderful few weeks of shows and adventures with friends and family.  Thank you so much to all I encountered, to those who hosted concerts, and to those who put me up.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Tomorrow….I head to the Yukon in pursuit of deepening my understanding of my next project – a tribute album to my father.  If you’re unfamiliar with the story, last time in Alberta I met a man in an Irish pub whose father booked mine in the only folk festival he ever played almost 40 years ago up in the town of Faro, YK.  It led to an email introduction to the original sound engineer and producer from CBC that recorded my Dad, and it  redefined the notion of “small world,” for me! haha

I am going to meet a variety of people with stories or involvement from that time, and my mom is joining me in this adventure – Really excited to share this experience with her!  Super pumped to be doing a show in the festival town my Dad performed (Faro), in.  That will be at the Spotlight Theater on April 6th.

Anyhow, when all this went down in January, I wrote a song after one of my morning walks that touched on this.  It is the most recent song I have written, and was the first one I recorded for the new album.  I made a video in Kelowna performing it live, and thought today would be the day to release it.  Enjoy – “Golden Breeze”

Looking forward to sharing the stories from this coming week!
